In terms of how it is perceived abroad, Australia's television industry frequently bats above its weight, particularly in terms of spend an hour on acquired content. As a consumer and illegal downloader of media it ranks high, and has a particular appetite for US content which can wax and wane.
Presently, we're a half moon waxing. Where Australia's small-market mentality lets it down, however, is the Seven vs Nine war of attrition. In media terms few topics are more exhausted. And while the obsession with overnight ratings is a universal truth in television, it is particularly heavy lodestone in Australia, where executives and journalists stare into it like Nietzsche's abyss.
Nine will make its own version of the racy British reality show Love Island , in which somethings hook-up in a tropical resort and compete for love, booze and prize money. What makes the entry of CBS into the market place so interesting then — aside from the fearsome combination of wiped debt and CBS' deep pockets — is that it comes to the market with a notable disinterest in playing the schoolyard games which have historically defined Australian television.
It also teaches a powerful lesson in a commercial market defined by its obsession with infrastructure and real estate: that in the end, the only thing that matters is content.

To the outsider's eye — that is, to see Ten through the CBS prism — the most striking thing about its schedule is its scale of dependence on acquired, unscripted franchises: I'm a Celebrity … , MasterChef , Australian Survivor , The Bachelor and The Bachelorette , to which in they will add Bachelor in Paradise.
Other new programming, unveiled at the network's Upfront, includes a reboot of Blind Date , a drama about "the women behind the men we barrack for on the footy field" c. It will likely reorder its channels — Ten, Eleven and One — and almost certainly look to launch a fourth. And in that sense the toyear-old Ten looks laughably childlike in hindsight. It has taken the fire of receivership — twice — but the baby of Australia's three commercial networks may be about to grow up.
